Grandparenting will be available for two years after proclamation.

The College of Social Workers has been granted the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy. The College of Social Workers will have developed its own criteria for social workers who also provide psychotherapy/counselling services. If you are a Social Worker who wishes to use the title Psychotherapist you must put your primary registration first. So you will need to present yourself as a Social Worker Psychotherapist. Only registered members of CRPO may call themselves Registered Psychotherapists.

It is up to each individual to determine which College best suits his/her needs. Therefore if you meet the criteria established by the College of Social Workers to be a Social Worker Psychotherapist you should be able to continue your practice. If you apply to CRPO after the two year grandparenting ends, you would need to apply through the regular route. Remember also that for currency hours, your work related to psychotherapy, including managing curriculum changes of a psychotherapy program would count.

What sort of documentation do we need to provide in our portfolio to show we meet requirements?

Sunday, 13 July 2014 00:59

An online application form, and additional materials/resources for applicants, are being created to facilitate applications for grandparenting. Keep checking the CRPO website for these materials.

The chart at the following link http://www.crpo.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Scoring-of-Portfolio-Evidence-for-Grandparenting-June-28-2013.pdf outlines the portfolio evidence required. Evidence is shown in a variety of ways. In some cases a declaration is made. In other cases the practitioner is expected to have material evidence (e.g. University degree, transcript).

Applicants for grandparenting must complete the application form. Further information, including other records or documentation (e.g. diplomas/ degrees/ certificates, transcripts, appointment books, advertising materials) that supports the application may be requested by the College of individual applicants or in the audit process. To ensure that the College is meeting its statutory obligations, the College will establish a process to randomly select 10% of applications to verify the information submitted.

Therefore, all applicants are strongly encouraged to maintain an organized and accessible portfolio of information that supports the evidence and claims made in their applications.

How many cases are enough to prove my competency?

The regulations do not stipulate requirements related to cases. Requirements are stated in terms of hours.

Could you explain what you mean by recent graduates?

Sunday, 13 July 2014 01:12

A specific definition is not available.

There are practitioners who may not meet the full RP requirements but who are close to meeting the requirements. Often, recent graduates fall into this category.

Qualifying registration is available to those in the process of qualifying to become a Registered Psychotherapist, who have completed a recognized education/ training program (or equivalent), and have substantially completed the full registration requirements but may need:

  • additional direct client contact hours, or
  • additional clinical supervision hours, or
  • additional (limited) education/ training,
  • and who wish to practise with clinical supervision, while working to meet the full requirements.

A non-exemptible registration requirement implies that no exceptions will be made in those cases where these requirements have not been fully met.

An applicant who meets the requirements for registration in the Qualifying category may work with clinical supervision to acquire the ‘in Canada’ hours within the two year grandparenting period, and may then choose to apply for a certificate of registration as an RP via the grandparenting route.

In this context, currency hours include direct client contact, record-keeping, preparation, research, consultation and professional development in relation to direct client contact. They also include teaching, supervising, conducting research, or writing in the field of psychotherapy, managing, consulting or other professional activities that impact the practice of psychotherapy.

You may only hold qualifying status for 5 years.

In order to substantiate your claim, you may have appointment books, an electronic calendar, a letter from your employer that indicates your hours worked. These should be kept as part of your portfolio.

For the registration requirements are any “currency hours” noted as part of the application acceptable e.g. hours doing committee work, conference participation, promoting the field through research presentations, teaching, guest lecturing at a university or college on arts-based research based in experiential classroom work?

For grandparenting, the Currency requirement states: 750 currency hours (500 in Canada) during 3 years prior to application, which may include a broad range of professional activities, including direct client contact and related record‐keeping, preparation, research, consultation; teaching, supervising, researching, writing, and managing.

Can telephone counselling and/or e-counselling be included as direct client contact?

Sunday, 13 July 2014 02:27
